My research is about the safe reuse of fecal sludge in agriculture. It involves talking to Septic tank cleaning truck operators, the sludge collectors, and farmers, the sludge users. The first step is to find the septic tank cleaners. When I was back in Berkeley, I tried googling for the numbers, looking for any yellow pages that might have listed the numbers. But no use. I landed in Kathmandu with the hope that I will be able to locate these cleaners by talking to the local people. The problem is: Jhamsikhel neighbourhood of Lalitpur, where I live, is connected to a underground drainage (UGD) system. So none of my neighbours have used the septic tank service in the recent years. I should go and talk to the people in the municipality to see what all areas have sewerage network and how are the rest serviced!
While I was struggling to find the phone numbers, one of my friends at ENPHO gave me a valuable tip – look at the classifieds section in the local newspaper – Kantipur! I found a good list of phone numbers of septic tank cleaners. I came to Kathamandu thinking that people here will understand my Hindi. Sadly, my Hindi is not as compatible with these people as I had thought it would be. My conversation with most of the septic tank cleaners did not go well. Only one person out of 8 agreed to meet me. I have also heard that Indians don’t have good reputation among Nepalis! Way to go India!
Here is the list of numbers I have been able to gather. Nepal country code is +977. Each bullet point is a separate service provider
